Favourites 2018
Here are my twelve favourite films of 2018, selected from the 55 film reviews I published this year and over 120 movies viewed. They stand out for me because of their power to entertain, inform, provoke, confront, and inspire.
It would be nice to say that this was an outstanding year for cinema, but that is not possible. Perhaps this reflects a decline or a hiatus in film quality, or more likely that the visual media space is going through radical transformation with new platforms, players, and audience expectations. While the Hollywood business model is being shaken to its core, global film literacy has never been higher. In an increasingly secular world, film continues to fill a void with messages of hope, morality, beauty, and love. Long may it live.

Whoa, what a statistic – 55 films reviewed and 120 watched!!
I like your fave list and agree that 2018 seemed to be (generally) a bit of a “meh” for the film industry… It’s been overrun by glossy but otherwise vacuous cartoon revamps and so-called “blockbuster” crowd pleasers. Few films come to mind that had any sort of 💡 moments. I’m not sure what’s on the calendar for 2019, but hopefully it finds its mojo!

It’s been a weird year, I’ve watched 1180 films give or take, and have written roughly 150 reviews but sadly not many from this year… Highlights include
Apostle, Hereditary, Unsane, Mandy and the Strangers prey at night, but the best new film I’ve seen this year is November but it was released last year… Absolute perfection!

Unsane left off far too many lists, Foy was exceptional! Hereditary seriously messed with me head as well and, for that, I commend it! ;-p

It’s interesting with all the new platforms for film watching, as Netflix are showing right now with Bird Box, and there’s almost TOO MANY ways to watch films or, at least, take them all in!
Nice list. Ones for me this year included Leave No Trace at the top, it’s never left me, plus the likes of A Star is Born and Lady Bird, both blew me away.

The great thing about reading other people’s movie bestlists is the field is expanded and the year’s offering seem much less ordinary than when they are just in your own head. Thanks for dropping by, and have a wonderfully filmic 2019.

I’m reading bird box today, I’m going to try and cram it in before I watch the movie… So far so good!

Oh dang Beast was this year!? I think i saw it at the London film festival in 2017 but it’s certainly a beautiful movie!! Whenever it came out

If I expanded my list of twelve to maybe 15, Beast would be there. I remember it fondly.

From your list I choose “Foxtrot”, “Tully” and “Leave No Trace”. There were other worthy additions such as recently watched film,“The Children Act”, but the three we have in common will do for starters.
I thought it was a good year for film but then again I ALWAYS think it’s a good year for film.
Oops! Almost forgot “The Summer of 1993”. How remiss!

Fantastic list! I haven’t seen many of these, which weren’t released in theatres here. I’d really love to watch Leave No Trace (Ben Foster is incredibly underrated!). Happy new year to you! 🙂

Leave No Trace was one of the best films I’ve seen EVER and Ben Foster was great! I can’t wait for it to be released for hire because I’ll watch it again.

Sooooo glad to see Leave No Trace included. It has a nice spot on my list. It’s a film I haven’t been able to get out of my mind. Even better, I showed to my 13-year-old daughter and it is among her favorites of the year as well. Made me so happy!
