2019 Film Favourites
It’s time for the annual sharing of the feast, otherwise described as posting one’s film favourites for the past year. Whether it was a time of abundance or deprivation is a matter of opinion.
Although reports of its demise may be premature, traditional cinema seems to have plateaued for now. Inexpensive online platforms are feeding insatiable demand while the cinema experience struggles against the tide.
Most film industry observers have their own metrics, but my quality benchmark is simple: I look at local movie offerings and all too often decide it’s not worth going out.
Despite such thoughts, there were many great films released for cinema last year. My twelve favourites for 2019 are below.
I’ve shown you mine, please show me yours.
Hoping for greater sanity across the globe in 2020!
2019 FAVOURITES:
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Joker
Never Look Away
Rocketman
Official Secrets
Marriage Story
The Favourite
Sometimes, Always, Never
Judy
The Guilty
If Beale Street Could Talk
Woman at War
My top twelve films are as follows:
Joker, Marriage Story, The Guilty, Australian Dream, Parasite, The Favourite, Sometimes Always Never, Capharnaum, Rocketman, The Nightingale, The Report and the latest film watched Sorry We Missed You.
This is by no means a definitive list and could change on a whim as it has several times already. I’m very sure of my selection at the top of my list but waver towards the end.
Have a happy new year Richard and good movie going in 2020.

Great list Anita; although to be honest everyone’s personal favourites will be a great list. Thanks for your contributions over 2019!!

I haven’t watched a few on your list. I agree that this year I haven’t been to the movies as much as in the past and it’s been slim pickings… Top 12 would be challenging, I’ll have a go at Top 5: Marriage Story, The Guilty, Chernobyl (I’m cheating here, it’s not a movie but the HBO series), Free Solo (I adore all mountaineering films but this one especially for the last 20 minutes) and an extremely small budget film called Just Say Goodbye.
Hope you have a great new year’s!

I also loved Free Solo, and thanks for the heads up on Chernobyl. It looks riveting. Lets hope for better cinema in 2020.

Thanks for sharing your list. I like to chase down films that others really enjoyed but have slipped past me last year.

Happy New Year dearie *beams*, I’ve only seen The Favourite on your list but as it turns out it was indeed . . . my favourite!
– Esme Cloud thinking she should also watch less series and more films in 2020

Nice to hear from you Esme; I would have thought that, from the Cloud, you had access to everything worth seeing.
